Margaret Harris, who organises the Irish Cancer Society Charity Walk, and Liam Connor, former Chairman of Fingallians GAA, were both presented with Mayor’s Awards last night.
Both were nominated for their incredible voluntary work for the community in Swords and nationally.
The nomination for Margaret Harris read:
Margaret and a small group of local helpers hold an annual
Irish Cancer Society Charity Walk in the Ward River Valley Park,
Swords, every autumn. The event started after Margaret received
a cancer diagnosis herself in 2003, which she beat, and has taken
place every year since. The event has grown from around 30
participants in its first year to hundreds taking part each year
since, raising over €100k down through the years for the Irish
Cancer Society.
The nomination for Liam Connor read:
Liam is a dedicated community worker and promoter of all
things associated with GAA and the Irish language. A member of
Fingallians since he moved to Swords more than 50 years ago,
Liam held many positions including Chairperson of the club for
6 years. He introduced and built the hurling and ladies football
codes in the club and regularly holds conversation groups as
gaeilge in the club where everyone is encouraged to speak the
language. Liam embraces all things cultural and generations of
young people have benefited from his work.
Cllr Ian Carey:
“So much of what is positive in Swords comes from the work of volunteers the length and breadth of the town. Last night it was really important to honour the work of Liam and Margaret whose incredible work down the years has helped to make Swords a special place. Congratulations to them both – their awards were really thoroughly deserved.”
