A signalised junction will be placed at the entrance of JC’s/Dunnes this year as part of the council’s Programme of Works.
The plans follow concerns raised around traffic speed and volume in the area and a number of accidents along the road.
In the last year the council placed a speed reader sign in the area but following a traffic audit engineers have concluded that traffic lights controlling entry and exit from the shopping centre was necessary.
Cllr Ian Carey said:
“Anyone who has tried to exit JCs recently will know that the volume of traffic has made it more and more dangerous. You are racing out into gaps in the traffic and often people are driving at speed towards you. It needs to dealt with and I’m glad to see this as part of the Programme of Works.
“We had a child knocked from a bike on the Rathbeale Rd last year and thankfullly they are okay but we badly need to slow traffic in the area before someone gets more seriously hurt.
“I proposed a motion in recent months to have safety checks performed in the area, on behalf of residents, and I’m glad that the council are taking serious action in relation to this.”
