Fingal County Council are going to tender this month for conservation and improvement works to Swords Castle.
The new works will involved improvements to the area known as ‘Knights and Squires’ which is to the left of the castle gate, as you look at it from Main St.
It is understood the works will involve making the Knight and Squires building accessible and involve some remaining masonry work to the south wall and the north east corner.
In a report to councillors, the Chief Executive explained:
“Tenders will issue in April for Phase III of the conservation works at Swords Castle, which includes a full M&E upgrade, conservation works to the North Wall and improvement works to the Knights and Squires Quarter.”
Responding to this Cllr Ian Carey said:
“I’m delighted that the Knights and Squires building will see some improvements. It is an area that is very visible from Main St. It’s a three story structure and clearly the name suggets the area was living quarters for those defending the castle. The lives of those who occupied the castle is often one of the most interesting aspects and hopefully in time the space could be used to educate people on the lives of its original inhabitants.”
