Cyclists and pestrians in Swords often complain of near misses with cars, now for the first times those incidents are being tracked.
The Collisiontracker.ie is an online map and reporting platform for people who want to log a near miss they have experienced or a more serious incident.
This is a project of Dublin Inquirer, a local, independent newspaper based in Dublin, and operated in partnership with cycling news site IrishCycle. Design and engineering is by Orbiter, a Dublin-based design group focused on climate action. We may add other news organisations to the consortium in future.
Some 93% of incidents involving bikes or pedestrians go unreported. This webite will now allow people to record their experiences so we can identify areas that are problematic.
Cllr Ian Carey said:
“This is a valuable tool for cyclists, pedestrians, and those interested in increasing public safety. Often people will explain how a certain area is dangerous but when you ask the Gardaí about it they have no recorded incidents. This will allow people to see a category of incidents below what is normally recorded. It should help inform decisions and change priorities.”
