The proposed Fosterstown North development, next to Boroimhe in Swords, has been rejected by An Bord Pleanala.
In their decision they described the proposed 10 apartment block development as ‘visually dominant, monolithic, and overbearing’ and added that it would have significant negative impacdtts on the R132 project and BusConnects.
The development, which borders the R132 and is directly across from Airside Retail Park, included 10 apartment blocks, the highest of which was 10 storeys and close to 40 meters in height.

Cllr Ian Carey said:
“This situation highlights the utter failure of the Strategic Housing Development (SHD) process, which has thankfully ended. We haved an agreed masterplan for the site, which was developed by Fingal County Council in consultation with the public, and it is really significant in size. But under the SHD laws the developer sought to push the densities and the heights even further only for the whole lot to be rejected. Rather than speeding up the development of homes, the SHD process has set us back years.
“This is a prime site for development, near the proposed Metrolink, yet now we are back to square one when it comes to building units. It’s a huge failure of the system at a time when we need to be delivering for people who desperately need homes.
“I hope that we will now see a proposal in line with the existing masterplan brought forward at pace.”
