Do you have a patch of ground that could take a tree?
If so you are in luck because Fingal County Council will be giving out free tree whips next week for National Tree Week.
National Tree Week 2023 will take place from 19th to 26th March and Fingal County Council has a number of initiatives planned to celebrate this including plans to distribute 16,000 trees to residents across the county, as well as hosting a number of community planting events and workshops.
Species that will be handed out this year include Cherry, Birch, Hazel and Alder. There is a limit of two per household. To reduce use of plastic please bring your own bag.
The Swords Tree Giveaway will take place from 9am to 1pm on Saturday March 25th at the new Ward River Valley car park, in Rivervalley. Get there early because there has been strong take up in previous years.
The Swords Woodland Association will also be hosting a community planting event for tree week. It will take place in the Ward River Valley Park Swords March 25th from 12noon to 1pm. Further information can be found at http://swordswoodland.ie
Cllr Ian Carey said:
“There is always huge interest in the tree giveaways so please come early to avoid disappointment – and to get a species you want. It’s great to see so many people embrace planting of native trees which are essential for supporting wildlife and helping with climate change.
“We are lucky in Swords to have some incredible wild wooded areas but it is important to continue to plant and build our stock of urban trees for the next generation to enjoy.”
