The Swords Cycle Network is a plan to develop connected cycling infrastructure in the town.
This week as part of an update on the Capital Programme of Fingal County Council, councillors were given an indicative timeline for the projects and the areas it will apply to.
The Swords Cycle Network will come forward as a series of cycle routes on the main access routes to Swords including: Rathbeale Rd, Brackenstown Rd, Forest Rd, and the Malahide Rd.
The manager outlined how the network is currently at ‘concept stage’ and that a consultant will be appointed later this year.
The timeline was presented as follows:
- 2023 – Survey work and option development
- 2024-2025 – Design & Environmental Assessment
- 2025-2026 – Statutory processes
- 2025-2027 – Construction
Cllr Ian Carey said:
“Swords is a hugely car centric town. Research found that 72% of people who life and work in Swords travel to work by car. To put this in perspective the figure for Los Angels is 78%. And this is despite the town being less than 5k in diameter.
“This will be of huge benefit to Swords, the people and community. It will lessen congestion, improve air quality, make the town safer, and improve health and well-being.”
