Close to 150 parents and supporters of a campaign to start a second level Irish language school in Swords area gathered last week.
The Gaelcholaiste Sord Mullach Íde campaign held two public meetings in Fingallians GAA club last week to push forward the campaign to push for a new Gaelcholaiste.
Currently students from the three gaelscoils in the Swords area have to travel to either Balbriggan or Donaghmede to continue their education through Irish. The number of students learning in Irish now demands a gaelcholaiste be developed in the Swords Malahide area.
Cllr Ian Carey said:
“It was great to attend this meeting and see the real enthusiasm for this campaign and new school in the Swords area. I’m hearing from a many parents that they really want to have the option for their child to continue education in Irish without having to travel very long distanes.
“It’s clear from reports recently that Swords not only needs a Gaelcholaiste but it also needs another second level school to meet the demand, particularly in South Swords.
“Based on the proposed population increases in the National Planning Framework Swords is due for a substantial population increase over the next decade and we need much better forward planning from the Department of Education in relation to Swords.
“I also want to say míle buíochas to Rachel and Ciarán for organising these meetings and pushing forward with this over many years.”
