Crime statistics for the last three months see a significant fall in burglaries in the Swords area.
Senior Gardaí have credited the establishment of the new Community Response Unit in Swords for the drop.
The figures, made available to the Fingal Joint Policing Committee, show 15 burglaries in recent months with 32 recorded for the same period in 2022, down 53%.
The new unit has increased the number of searches in the Swords area with 78 listed over the last month compared to 47 in 2022.
While the statistics on burglaries were positive there was a significant increase in theft from shops in the Swords area. Up from 82 last year to 131 in 2023.
Cllr Ian Carey said:
“The burglary statistics are very positive news because they show that when new initiatives are brought in they can really work. Burglaries can have a terrible impact on communities. When someone invades your home like this it can really leave a lasting impact.
“I’m sorry to see some of the theft statistics increase. In Swords there have been issues with garda numbers – no sooner have we received new officers but others move on to other units. I’m glad to see now we have seen some tangible improvements with the Community Response Unit and hopefully they can be deployed effectively against problems such as scrambler use.”
